A Survey on Collaboration with Occupational Therapist for Physical Therapists working in Nursing Hospital

Abstract

|
Objective : A questionnaire survey on experiences with collaborating with occupational therapists was conducted on physical therapists who work with occupational therapists in nursing hospital.
Methods : From March to April 2019, 75 physical therapists working in nursing hospital with occupational therapists in Busan, Gyeongsan-do conducted online surveys. The questionnaire was 17 items consisted of general characteristics of the subjects, demands for collaboration, contents about official meeting, and informal collaboration.
Results : 100% of respondents answered that they needed 'very necessary' or 'necessary' in the question about the necessity of collaboration with occupational therapists. The frequency of official team meetings was ¡¯once a week¡¯. In the form of active collaboration, there were many sharing and suggesting ideas related to the treatment method, and sharing information about clients. The advantages of collaborating with occupational therapists were efficient treatment and setting of treatment direction. The difficulties of collaboration were lack of understanding of each other and difficulty in coordinating opinions. The reasons for absence of team meetings in the workplace were location, time constraints, lack of willingness, etc. The most common means of informal collaboration was direct communication.
Conclusion : This study can be used as a basic data for creating environment and strategy for promoting collaboration between occupational therapist and physical therapist.
